12 December 2024

As the year comes to a close, it’s the perfect time to review your business’s performance, tie up loose ends, and prepare for a strong start to the new year. Wrapping up your business for the year doesn’t have to be overwhelming—just follow this checklist to make sure everything is in order before you take a well-deserved break.

1. Review Financials

  • Organise Tax Documents: Gather receipts, invoices, and financial statements for the tax  quarter.
  • Reconcile Accounts: Ensure all income and expenses are recorded and reconciled.

2. Assess Business Performance

  • Reflect on Goals: Review the goals you set for this year. What did you achieve? What fell short?
  • Identify Wins and Challenges: Celebrate successes and document lessons learned.
  • Review Key Metrics: Look at sales, customer retention, and other critical KPIs to gauge performance.

3. Wrap Up Loose Ends

  • Complete Outstanding Tasks: Finish any open projects or delegate as needed.
  • Send Final Invoices: Ensure all invoices are sent and payments are collected.

  • Prepare an Out-of-Office Message: Set up email autoreply and update your voicemail.
  • Make a plan for what happens if a client needs urgent attention; who do they go to, and what is considered urgent?

4. Organised Your Workplace

  • Clean Your Desk and Files: Start the new year with a clutter-free space.
  • Back Up Data: Ensure your important business files and systems are backed up securely.
  • Update Software and Tools: Check for updates on tools or systems you rely on.
  • What can improve your workplace next year to be even more productive and healthier.

5. Reflect on Your Team and Network

  • Celebrate Achievements: Acknowledge your team’s efforts this year.
  • Conduct Year-End Reviews: Offer feedback to employees and discuss plans for next year.
  • Ask for Feedback: What do the team and customers suggest as improvements for next year.
  • Plan Training: Identify skill gaps and schedule professional development for the new year.

6. Plan for Next Year

  • Set New Goals: Outline clear, measurable objectives for the next year.
  • Update Your Business Plan: Make adjustments based on this year’s performance and market trends.
  • Plan Marketing Campaigns: Develop a content calendar or promotional schedule for Q1.
  • Evaluate Tools and Services: Assess whether your current software, services, or subscriptions still meet your needs.

7. Take Time to Rest and Recharge

  • Schedule Downtime: Block time to truly step away and recharge. You'll be stronger after the break!
  • Each year of life is a gift: I call them laps of life: How many summers have you got left, and how are you planning your best life?
  • Plan Personal Goals: Reflect on how you want to balance work and personal life next year.
  • Express Gratitude: Thank your clients, team, and network for their support.

Wrapping up the year is not just about closing the books—it’s about setting yourself up for success in the year ahead. You can end the year with clarity, confidence, and excitement for what’s about to come your way.  It's within your reach.
